Do you think this is an acceptable way to respond?
That is, instead of "I'm fine." or "I'm well."
It seems easiest and less formal to use "good," but I find myself cringing when I hear people say So-and-so is "doing good."

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Tue, March 29, 2005 - 7:29 PM"I'm good" sounds better to me somehow than "Harry's doing good."
How about when people start a sentence like this, "Being that I live in the neighborhood..."

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Fri, April 1, 2005 - 6:25 AM"I'm good" is a colloquialism, as acceptable today as "I'm cool." In a way, it's better, because "I am good" (meaning "I am worthy") is a grammatically valid expression, whereas "I am cool" makes no sense outside of its colloquial use, unless you suffer from hypothermia.

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Mon, April 18, 2005 - 11:37 PMMaybe those who respond with "I'm good," are actually speaking from a high horse, as if everone else is "evil." -

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 12:24 PMfor me it's the opposite high horse thing... sometimes called laziness. while i know very well the correct foraml response to "how are you?" may be "I'm well", I lapse with customers on a regular basis. I don't want to seem like i'm correcting them, especially if they've answered in the colloquial first.

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Sat, April 30, 2005 - 2:29 PMIt's funny, I just realized it never occurs to me to say "I'm good" to this query. Not because of any strong dislike of the phrase, but just because I was taught as a child that the *only* acceptable response was "Fine, thank you. How are you?" This just pops out of my mouth automatically whether I'm "fine" or not. Pavlovian response, I guess ;-) -

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Sat, May 7, 2005 - 9:24 AMGood can sound like bad grammer, or be seen many ways.
Copacetic is appropriate but not flowing.
Fine is like hair.
Hunky Dory has some rad jammin' tracks. :)
Alrighty then is geeky.
Great is a way to start the day.
Fine and dandy is dangerous in the south. :)
Like the weather is what we say in Brooklyn. :):):) -

Tue, May 10, 2005 - 9:02 PM> :grammar::
Thank you. That one drives me crazy.
It also drives me crazy when people refer to spelling and punctuation as "grammar".

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Sat, July 23, 2005 - 5:11 AMMy typical response is, "Do you want the honest answer or the polite answer?"
Otherwise, I will simply say, "Fine. And you?" -

Re: How are you? --I'm good.
Sun, May 31, 2009 - 3:32 PMThat phrase does not sound good to me, it reminds me of a scripture in the bible....
Quote: ''Matthew 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. '' (there is none good but one, that is, God)
So I choose not to use that phrase, and I think there are better responses that could be made instead.:)
