for me it's:
fashoin (forget where the i goes)
afterward (should be an 'o,' not an a)
traveling (always unsure if there's two Ls there or not)
others i can't think of right now.

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Fri, February 4, 2005 - 8:35 PM"Afterward" is correct if you're referring to the time that follows. "Afterword" is a part of a book.
Just today I had trouble with traveling. It is one l, right? I used to have trouble with signature when I was younger. It seems I wanted it to behave like "Parliament", and so spelled it "signiature". What a weirdo.

Sun, February 6, 2005 - 3:10 AMI don't ever misspell them, but these two, especially when considered together, have sometimes made me stop to think about it for a moment:

Does "jeopardy" get you, too?
I never believe that I've spelled "curiosity" right. I always want to stick the entire "curious" in it.

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Wed, February 9, 2005 - 10:21 AMTraveling is a hard one for me because I correspond with friends in the UK and Australia and there the word is properly spelled with two lls as "travelling".
Actually, this international correspondence has started to make me a bit of a schizophrenic speller! When I write to English/Australian friends I tend to adopt their spellings ('color' becomes 'colour', 'realize' morphs into 'realise', etc.) Later, I find these "Queen's English" spelling habits bleeding into my everyday writing. Now I have to stop and make myself think about whether I'm writing for Americans or friends overseas before I sit down at my keyboard!
The hardest word for me though is "niece". This should be ridiculously easy to spell but about 50% of the time I get it wrong. No idea why. To check if I'm spelling it correctly I repeat that old rhyme about "i before e except after c" but the word still just "looks" wrong to me.

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Sun, February 13, 2005 - 12:19 PMMany still randomly. There's just one serial word:
definitily (oh, - quaint Italian cursing - again!) -> ^H^H^H and then I correct
As for "travel(l)ing" (and "snorkel(l)ing") I will have a hard time. I try to stick to AmEng, but I always end up doubling the Ls. It's stronger than me.
Then, there's all the colour-color, analyze-analyse, theater- theatre stuff, but it's way beyond my possibilities to remember which one is British and which one American. I'll write whatever my heart dictates at the moment. -

Unsu...
On doubling the Ls
Sat, July 23, 2005 - 5:05 AMWhy, just yesterday I used "cancelled" in an e-mail exchange at work. While I consistently use a single L with other verbs, "cancelled" just -- dare I say it? -- looks better to me than "canceled".

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Mon, February 14, 2005 - 5:34 PMput me in for necessary. no matter how often i get it right i can't get past the doubt...
i wonder what my brain is doing electrochemically when i have those little "misfires" where i see a word i've never questioned yourself on before and all of a sudden it becomes alien to me, and i stop and think "what?".
"match" got me on Friday. i was trying to write matchstick blinds and it really took a good minute before i could move on to the stick part...
"hightail" got me out of a spelling bee in 6th grade and only recently have i begun to undo the desire to NEVER EVER KNOW HOW TO SPELL THAT STUPID WORD. of course the trauma of being wrong was compounded by my coke addict teacher berating me about it for the entire school year.... ahhh the memories. (still not certain how to spell it though) -

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 2:05 PM'Occurrence' or 'occurring' were always difficult. I always felt inclined to put just one 'r.' I have them mastered now, but I can't tell you how many times I had to look up those words.
Sometimes when I'm writing in email, and can't remember how to spell something, I open a new Word doc, type in the word, and see if the spell checker underlines it as being incorrect. It's quicker than looking it up in the dictionary.
By the way, how in the world can you look up a word you have no idea how to spell? One word that has had me stymied for the longest time--a word I would never use because it sounds so hoity toity to me, is "copacetic," or something like that. I tried looking for that word with every spelling I could imagine and still couldn't find it. I've never seen it in writing, obviously. Is it a real word? -

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:37 PMi think it is a real word. but i hate it too. people love to word drop that one. i don't know how to spell it either.
on a totally unrelated topic, that's interesting stuff on your profile about daniel ellsberg... i also heard him speak before Bush's re-election about the pentagon papers. he made a call for someone in the administration to stand up and speak out, just as he did during Vietnam.
maybe none of this would have had to happen at all if W had had to pass a simple 4th grade spelling test to become president. -

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 7:33 PMHow can you hate "copacetic"?? It's a great slang word -- beatnik cool and ragtime cool at the same time.

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 7:32 PM"copacetic" is slang.
Not hoity toity in the least.
And yeah, that's exactly how it's usually spelled. Gold star for you!
It's hipster jazz musician slang from the 1940s or before.
You won't find it in a lot of dictionaries.
The etymology is unknown, but it may be related to the Hebrew expression "kol b'seder", meaning, loosely, "everything is ready and OK". It may have entered the jazz community via tin pan alley Jewish immigrant musicians around the turn of the century.

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 7:36 PMI agree with all you double consonant haters.
I used to have shit's own time spelling "accommodate".
Now, I just remember there's a "commode" in there somewhere. Well ... 6/7 of one, anyway. -

Re: What words do you repeatedly misspell?
Sun, July 31, 2005 - 10:47 PMAh, thanks, Mary, for the bit o' history on copacetic. I think I finally did see it somewhere and since I'm very visual, I usually can remember a spelling once I've seen it. Anyway, I love jazz, so maybe I'll just lighten up on that word now, thanks! See, ya made a difference today!
YES! YES! YES! Don't we all wish Bushie boy had had to take a spelling test! That might have eliminated him from the running right there.
